So what is THE best joint supplement?
If I had £1 for every time I was asked this question!
Everyone plays their part in Team Dog to successfully manage pain, not only one component will work it has to be different sources of support to get the best for your dog. So let’s take a closer look at these supplements.
It can sometimes be tempting to go for the most expensive supp, but this doesn’t necessarily mean it is the best.
Now it’s no secret that I am a huge advocate for species-appropriate feeding (raw, home-cooked, BARF, a dog’s dinner) when we’re feeding dogs what they require on a cellular level we can look to optimise health and healing. However I appreciate raw doesn’t suit every dog but if we can add something fresh, we’re onto a winner!
So this list is what I use with my dogs to supercharge their bowl. Every dog is an individual and this list is not exhaustive of all the supplements. This list is also in no way here to replace any veterinary care.
- Raw chicken feet / chicken wings
- Raw whole fish (smaller the better ie sprats, sardines in spring water)
- Green-lipped mussels (if struggling to source from your local fishmongers Paleo Ridge Berry Plus is excellent)
- Bone broth, check out my review of Karnlea Bone Broth
- There are wonderful herbs to support your dogs joints, too many to list! Check out my review of
Aniforte's Rosehip Powder
For a more personalised approach, you can book an Applied Herbal Choices session with me! - Homeopathy is another great shout to and definitely find your local homeopathic vet or qualified Animal Homeopath.
Ok so there is a fair bit on here, my advice is start off slowly, don’t go piling all of this into your dog’s diet at once. If an upset tummy occurs or your dog improves, how can you narrow down what is actually having an effect.
It’s important we are objective and realistic about how a supplement is working for your dog. My first recommendation is working out what a good day and bad day looks like for your dog. Make a little note in your diary or phone what you’ve started to add and allow your supps to have time and a fair chance to work. Just because one supplement worked great for Scrappy in the park, doesn’t mean it will work wonders with your dog, so keep that in mind.
I hope this little whistle stop tour on my recommendations starts you in the right direction of using supplements with a purpose, as part of a multimodal pain management or just general joint well-being.
